WebCT Standards
Interoperability Standards & Accessibility

WebCT is committed to interoperability standards and is an active participant in their development. WebCT has partnered with a variety of organizations to provide critical input toward the development of open standards for e-learning.

Why Standards?

Establishing common data structures and Application Program Interfaces (APIs) benefit the e-learning industry and institutions by allowing for the reusability, portability, platform independence, and longevity of digital content. For more general information, read:

WebCT's Leadership

WebCT Campus Edition and WebCT Vista reflect our commitment to interoperability standards.

  • In September 2003, WebCT became the first course management system vendor to prototype, demonstrate Open Knowledge Initiative support

  • In March 2001, WebCT developed and released the IMS Enterprise API, in accordance with the IMS Enterprise 1.01 Specification.

  • In August 2001, WebCT introduced the industry's first IMS Content Migration Utility, which paved the way for greater openness and sharing of content within and among institutions.

  • WebCT Vista, a Java2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) compliant application, was designed and architected with IMS and other existing and emerging standards in mind.

  • In December 2002, WebCT became the first course management system vendor to demonstrate product support for 'Shibboleth' access and authorization technology.

Read more about WebCT's leadership in this area, or view an archive of an online seminar, Demystifying Standards: What Are They, and Why Should They Matter to You?, which featured Kimberly Voltero of WebCT and Fred Beshears of UC Berkeley. The seminar covered practical implications and issues surrounding the development and acceptance of standards, including WebCT's standards compliance, and what you can do to verify that vendors are compliant with particular standards.
